“Motivational interviewing is a particular way of helping people to recognize and do something about a problem behaviour. It was developed in the early 1980s from work with people with alcohol problems (Miller, 1983; Miller, Sovereign & Krege, 1988). It rapidly became a major way of working in the addictions field by providing an attractive counselling method particularly useful in dealing with ambivalent or resistant drinkers.” (Terry, 1999)

In this program, we'll introduce the concept and theory of Motivational Interviewing (MI); including the goal of MI, the spirit of MI, the stages of change, and the 4 principles of MI. This program is intended to be a primer for mental health providers to then be followed up by more extensive training. After attending this course participants will be able to:

  • Define the four principles of Motivational Interviewing

  • Summarize the stages of change

  • Examine how the goal of MI, eliciting change talk, can be used within various clinical populations.

  • Consider “ambivalence” within the context of MI

  • Describe the spirit of MI in clinical settings
