Summary

AFAB folks are historically underrepresented in medical and mental health research leading to illness and treatment models that disregard fundamental differences in the lived experiences of women and femmes. This is particularly evident in areas of female hormonal changes across the lifespan, mental and physical changes associated with motherhood, and the impact of inequitable mental labor distributions between spouses.

Our multi-disciplinary panel will feature experts who have worked extensively with women in caregiving roles and will address the following learning objectives:

Learning Objectives

  1. Determine the role of hormonal shifts across the female lifespan that are likely to be missed or misdiagnosed in counseling settings.
  2. Identify strategies for accurately differentiating between ADHD and cognitive changes related to caregiver burnout and hormonal changes.
  3. Examine unique challenges women and femmes face when caring for children with special needs, particularly related to neurodivergence.
  4. Distinguish the unique challenges faced by mothers with intersecting marginalized identities.
  5. Identify ways to empower women and femmes and advocate for lasting systemic change.
