Summary

One adage that has become a foundational philosophy for many counselors is that the relationship is the most important aspect of the work.  Research supports the mediating and moderating impact of a sound relationship on therapeutic growth, but little training is dedicated to strategies for maintaining or repairing relationships through breaches and ruptures.

In this training, join scholar and psychodynamic therapist, Frances Beroset to explore how countertransference and transference can be skillfully addressed in the counseling relationship to reduce therapist burnout and enhance client growth.

Learning Objectives

  1. Define transference and countertransference
  2. Explain differences between concordant and complementary countertransference
  3. Identify 3  common psychotherapy problems influenced by transference and/or countertransference
  4. Give examples of one scenario in clinical practice where countertransference may be addressed directly in session, and one in which countertransference is best addressed in the clinician’s individual supervision, consultation, or therapy
