Summary
In this episode, I'll be talking with Michelle Helms, PMHNP-BC, PMH-C about her work with mood and anxiety disorders that emerge during the perinatal period. We'll be addressing the biology of these disorders, exploring best practices for treatment, and identifying the role of medical racism in mental health care for birth givers of color.

- Describe vulnerability factors that contribute to the development of PMADS that may be assessed in a counseling setting.
- Explain the role of culture, systemic inequities, and socialization in how clients seek mental health and/or medical treatment for PMADS

- Integrate the role of exposure related to treated and un-treated PMADS for mom and baby as it may present in a counseling setting.

Guest Instructor Michelle Helms
Michelle has been a nurse for over 30 years. She was a women's health nurse practitioner working in OB for almost 10 years prior to becoming a psychiatric nurse practitioner. She holds an additional certification for perinatal mental health through Postpartum support International. She works as a psychiatric mental health nurse practitioner treating women's mood disorders across the lifespan with a specialty focus on women's mood disorders during pregnancy and the postpartum period.
Executive Director Candice Creasman Mowrey
PhD, LCMHCS - Dr. Candice Creasman Mowrey received a Masters in Rehabilitation Counseling and Psychology from the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill in 2008, and a Doctorate in Counseling and Counselor Education from North Carolina State University in 2015. She has worked in psychosocial rehabilitation, in-patient, community agency, disability services, and intensive outpatient settings. She founded Creasman Counseling, PLLC, a single-person private practice, in 2011, which has grown to a team of over 30 culturally and professionally diverse clinicians. Dr. Creasman Mowrey has been adjunct faculty at NCSU and Northwestern University and has provided clinical supervision since 2014.
Counselors
Creasman Counseling PLLC's courses meet the qualifications for CE hours as required by NBCC. Beyond Therapy has been approved by NBCC as an Approved Continuing Education Provider, ACEP #7234. Programs that do not qualify for NBCC credit are clearly identified. Creasman Counseling, PLLC is solely responsible for all aspects of the program.
Social Workers
Creasman Counseling, PLLC, provider number #2100, is approved as an ACE provider to offer social work continuing education by the Association of Social Work Boards (ASWB) Approved Continuing Education (ACE) program. Regulatory boards are the final authority on courses accepted for continuing education credit. ACE provider approval period: 1/21/25 - 1/21/26.
