Course Overview

This training provides mental health therapists with practical knowledge and tools to effectively engage children in therapy while fostering collaborative relationships with parents. Drawing on principles from Counseling Children (Henderson, D. A. & Thompson, C. L., (2007), the training highlights developmental considerations, rapport-building, evidence-based interventions, and ethical issues such as confidentiality. Participants will practice applying strategies through case examples and interactive activities. While especially beneficial for clinicians who work directly with children, this workshop is also valuable for all therapists, as it equips them to better support parents and caregivers navigating their child’s mental health needs.

Learning Objectives

By the end of this workshop, participants will be able to:

  1. Identify developmental considerations that shape children’s experiences in therapy and influence intervention strategies.

  2. Demonstrate rapport-building techniques that foster trust and safety with children of different ages.

  3. Apply developmentally appropriate interventions tailored to children’s cognitive, emotional, and social needs.

  4. Describe effective strategies for collaborating with parents, including setting boundaries, navigating confidentiality, and addressing family dynamics.
